The Master Builder

World Premiere Translation
by Henrik Ibsen
Translated from the Norwegian by Paul Walsh
directed by Barbara Oliver
EXTENDED to March 12, 2006!
On the centenary of Ibsen’s death, Aurora is presenting Ibsen’s most autobiographical drama. The Master Builder examines the life of architect Halvard Solness, once ruthlessly ambitious, but now, in his later years, threatened by the younger generation and worried about the erosion of his own creativity. As this masterpiece progresses, Solness’s life is irrevocably changed by the arrival of a beautiful young woman and the secrets they share. This powerful look at ego and empire building was groundbreaking in its use of psychological realism (Freud stated this was his favorite play), possessing a quality attempted but seldom duplicated by playwrights since.
"a savvy blend of naturalism and psychological expressionism...in a crisp, taut, gracefully flowing new translation." - SF Chronicle (read the full review)
"The dialogue crackles with intensity, and the actors seem to relish the double meanings of just about every line." - Contra Costa Times (read the full review)

This year marks the centenary of Ibsen’s death, and theatres all over the world are celebrating his legacy with productions and innovative programming. Aurora Theatre Company is part of this celebration with its production of The Master Builder. In tandem with the production, Aurora is thrilled to announce a creative partnership with UC Berkeley’s Scandinavian studies department, which invites you to join scholars and theatre practitioners at a one-day conference entitled "Ibsen Elsewhere".
There will be two sessions: the 10am- 12pm session features the presentation of four academic papers treating the reception, perception, or performance of Ibsen's plays as they travel between cultures, and the 2pm-4pm session offers a panel discussion featuring the director Barbara Oliver, translator Paul Walsh, and cast members of Aurora Theatre's production of The Master Builder, who will speak specifically to the challenges of presenting this 19th-century Norwegian play to a Berkeley audience in 2006.
The Symposium is free of charge and will be held February 17th on campus.
