The Trojan Women

Professional World Premiere
by Ellen McLaughlin
inspired by Euripides
directed by Barbara Oliver
April 4, 2008 - May 11, 2008

show length: 1 hour, no intermission

Inspired by Euripides’ classic anti-war tragedy, THE TROJAN WOMEN, written by acclaimed actress and playwright Ellen McLaughlin (who originated the role of “Angel” in Angels in America) vividly recounts the final moments of Trojan civilization in the aftermath of the city’s sacking by the invading Greeks. Queen Hecuba, the slave-concubine Andromache, and the mythic Helen, meet in the ruins and together find victory in the female spirit amid the horrors visited upon them by both gods and men. Aurora’s founding Artistic Director Barbara Oliver, director of Aurora’s acclaimed production of McLaughlin’s The Persians, helms this beautifully re-invented classic that makes the struggles of ancient Greece as immediate as the headlines of today.

"Offers a banquet of thought....presented in a breathtaking presentational style that makes no bones about its theatricality" - Contra Costa Times

"...A poetic incantation that's as spare and elegant as it is lightning-quick." - San Jose Mercury News
