The Global Age Project 2008

Artistic Director Tom Ross created the GAP with the goal of promoting forward-looking new works that address issues of the 21st century and beyond. Several new plays selected from an international pool of playwrights will be read in the Monday night play reading series in tandem with the full production of Diana Son’s Satellites.

When their father abandons them to go to America, two young brothers in Mexico embark on a desperate, ambitious journey. Our Dad is in Atlantis reveals the world around us through innocent and tragic eyes. Born in Mexico City, Javier Malpica is the author of more than 10 plays. In 2007, he earned a grant from the Lark Play Development Center for a translation and a public reading of Our Dad is in Atlantis. Translator Jorge Cortiñas is the recipient of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. His plays have been produced or developed by Campo Santo, Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Repertory Theatre, and Hartford Stage. His most recent play, Bird in the Hand, was developed at the 2007 Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference.

Kings Play Chess on Fine Green Satin by Michelle Carter

What do we sacrifice when we give up growing old? Set in the not-too-distant future, Kings Play Chess on Fine Green Satin is a fantastical exploration about what happens when a scientific breakthrough makes it possible to live your entire life at a chosen age. When one woman chooses to age naturally, the whole world is turned upside down. Michelle Carter’s plays include Hillary and Soon-Yi Shop for Ties and Ted Kaczynski Killed People with Bombs. Her work has been seen at the Magic Theatre and Mark Taper Forum, among others. A creative writing professor at San Francisco State University, Carter is the recipient of a Backstage Garland Award, a PEN Award, and a BATCC nomination.

Sick by Zayd Dohrn

In Sick, a college professor brings his star student home to meet his dysfunctional family – a home so obsessed with cleanliness that the real dirt lurks around every corner and behind every sentence. Toying with our post 9/11 phobias, this quirky dark comedy plays upon our fears, both real and imagined. Zayd Dohrn is currently a Lila Acheson Wallace Playwriting Fellow at Juilliard. His plays have been produced or developed at Alchemy Theatre, Boston Playwrights Theatre, and Woolly Mammoth Theatre. Dohrn has garnered playwriting residencies at Alchemy Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre of London.

Events With Life's Leftovers by Alberto Villarreal Diaz

A poetic, chaotic, and moving tale of evolution and adaptation in the modern world, Events with Life’s Leftovers follows the residents of an apartment building as they celebrate insomnia, and life’s beginnings and endings. Experimenting with theatrical form, playwright Alberto Villarreal Diaz’s plays have been produced and published in Mexico, Chile, and England. His work has also been featured in various festival series, including Arena México, a showcase of new, Mexican playwrights organized by the Royal Court Theatre of London. He is currently the Artistic Director of Artillería Producciones and La Madriguera Theatre in Mexico City. A graduate of Brown University, Andy Bragen’s plays and translations have been produced at the Guthrie Theatre, The Playwrights Center, Rattlestick Theatre, LAByrinth, and the Lark, among others.
