There are more than 250 theater companies in the city, which has been hailed by London's The Guardian as "the theatre capital of America." It's the city that invented storefront theatre, as well as the one that's supported nationally-recognized companies including The Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre.
